Baptized!!

Well, back in January when I wrote my testimony here, I realized when I was writing it that I couldn't remember ever being baptized. So, I asked my mom and sure enough--I had NEVER been baptized. At first, I was a little apprehensive...like I already thought I was baptized....do I really need to be baptized at 27 years of age??? But after prayer, reading my bible, and just plain thinking it over-the answer was YES. Not only did it end up being a yes, but I am GLAD that I waited until now because I feel like God has really been changing who I am this year more than ever before. I feel like I am truly dying to my old ways and desiring the things of Jesus. Of course I should mention that I fail several times throughout each and every single day. Turns out I am a bit of a slow learner..haha! These pictures are blurry but that is me before....
and after. Let me tell you that I was surprised because they don't just kind of cover you with water--they dunk you as far as you can go!
Also, I said that I would write updates on how things were going for us spiritually from time to time but I have been behind in posting ever since (and still am) so I will go ahead and do that on this post because it seems appropriate. I will give the fasting update, how bible reading is going and my tips, and how excited I am about some things going on at church.
First, we finished our fast way back in February but I never shared the reason we were fasting. We actually just started fasting for God's guidance as to where we should be. We were in a place that was too small before we had Reid and way too small after he was born but we knew we didn't want to do another temporary move. We wanted a HOME that we could be SETTLED in. Now, when we started fasting we were open to the idea of going somewhere else temporarily if that was God's plan...but we really didn't want it to be. In our minds, we thought surely he wanted us to move closer to Matt's family...why wouldn't he want us to be closer to family, right? But within days of starting our fast, we pretty much knew that he wanted us to stay in Northwest Arkansas! By the end of the fast, there was NO DOUBT for either one of us and we started looking for homes and had already found our church home!
I had never fasted before...the thought had never really crossed my mind at all. But if you are really struggling with something and need God's clarity--I highly recommend trying it. If you have any questions, please email me at sarascott8704@yahoo.com
Second, Bible Reading. I have read the entire New Testament and am now reading through the Old Testament...I am in Numbers. My kids nap together in the afternoon and the first thing I do everyday during the week is read my bible. I try to read three chapters every day. At first, it was really kind of difficult to give up the little "me time" I had during the day because sometime that was all I got BUT I did it and now I look forward to it every day (except when I was reading Leviticus..oh.my.word! ha!) I don't understand everything I read and there were days when I might as well of read it in a foreign language because my head hurt and I knew I didn't "get" the point. However, the more I read, the more I understand! So...my tips for reading the bible...
  1. Make time for it.
  2. I started reading a chapter from the Old Testament and a chapter from the New Testament but then decided I wanted to know how I was supposed to be living NOW so I went back to the beginning of the New Testament and read the whole thing....that is my preferred way to start.
  3. The Bible is not meant to be read for enjoyment...it is meant to be read and reflected on. As I read (especially the New Testament), I would try to think of what in my life could this be related to...something I need to change? something giving me confirmation that I am on the right path? In our small group, the guy that leads it said to Read, Reflect, and Respond. I think that sums it up pretty well.
  4. Write down the verses that really speak to you. It is too hard to find them highlighted in the bible once you get so far along. I have a "good verses" section in my notebook.
  5. Make note of the sections that you just don't get...there are bible studies out there to help! Now that I am through the New Testament I am going to start doing some bible studies to help with the parts I didn't understand to kind of break up the Old Testament reading because there are parts of it that I just can't wrap my head around.

I don't at all have studying the bible figured out. I just started in January! I will say that there have been a couple of times that I KNOW that God spoke to me through my bible...and ladies and gents...that is AWESOME. Quiet time with the Lord is so great and it just helps me keep my priorities in check, helps me with my attitude and keeps me from being as selfish as I would like to be some days, and it just deepens my relationship with Him.

Third, the things at our church. Our church recently read the book Radical by David Platt (a good, honest, and convicting read) and it has really started changing the way our church is doing things. We have connection groups (aka small groups) and now the goal of the connection group is to turn them into mission groups. Where each CG (connection group) focuses on a group of people in the area to just show God's love and build relationships with...kind of local mission groups. We are about to get rolling and I can't wait to be able to share some details!

Also, our church is opening a new location and our family is going to be one of the core starter members. I have a feeling we have no idea what we just got ourselves into but we really felt God leading us to do it and we wanted to challenge ourselves to grow even more in the Lord.

Oh, and there is one part of the bible that has just been really on my mind lately so I thought I would share it. It is where Jesus is at dinner and he sits with the tax collectors and other "un-holy" type people and some people are asking Him why he was sitting with those people and he says, "I didn't come here to save the righteous, I came to save the sinners" (I am paraphrasing and probably butchering it but the overall jist is right.) I really feel convicted by this verse...I need to do a better job of reaching out to people that don't have it all figured out or that might even be difficult...I am not sure...I haven't got it figured out. Feel free to pray for some clarity as to why this is on my mind so heavily lately. (c: Let me know if you have any questions! I will try to do better at more frequent updates so I don't have to overload with lots of small details!

Great stuff! I actually need to be baptized too. My parents never did it when we were young because they knew that we wouldnt truly understand it. We just need to find a church home and get on it!

I have been thinking about being baptized too, but I'm 32 and I was baptized as a baby. But that was into the Catholic faith, which I don't feel connected to. I started attending a Bible church in July and I'm feeling kind of lost but I'm okay with that. I'm scared to be dunked!!! My church does "full immersion" and it just sounds scary to me. Thanks for sharing your pictures, I have been curious what it looks like!
